2013 Violet Richardson Award
First Place Winner
Morgan is a junior at Cal HS in San Ramon and learned from an early age how rewarding community service can be from working with her mother at the Make-A-Wish foundation. She herself worked for the Young Professional Advisory Council associated with this organization and spent time fundraising and working hands-on with those getting their wishes granted (a difficult yet rewarding experience).
When her mother started working with another non-profit, "Special Spaces" Morgan became involved as well. This organization provides room makeovers for children with life threatening illnesses. She has participated in all 25 room makeovers (each taking 1-5 days for 10 hrs a day!). Seeing a need for the siblings of these children to not be left out, she created a "Teen Tagalong" program. She has personally designed two sibling's rooms so far. She also founded a club of "Special Spaces" on the campus at Cal High.
Morgan is currently serving her 2nd term as Vice President of the S Club at Cal High. She was instrumental in the success of the service retreat last year, even facilitating her own workshop on time management. She participated in our 10th annual "She's All That!" conference by co-facilitating the "Transition to High School" workshop with Jessica that was very well received by the 8th grade girls.
When Morgan is not at school or studying you will find her involved in community service - either one of the organizations I just mentioned or working with the Science Alliance Club, the Beauty Insider Club or going to Lions Club evens with her grandma.
Second Place Winner
Jessica is a junior at Cal HS in San Ramon. She is an active volunteer at her church, St. Joan of Arc, and is part of their leadership team there (mentoring youth). Through the church, she also participates in programs serving the homeless in the city and the MedShare program, sending medical equipment and supplies to underserved countries.
She has been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten and is now a Juliet, volunteering as a camp counselor at the Girl Scout's Diablo Day Camp over the summer.
Most significantly, she is the currently serving as the President of the S Club at Cal High. She also served as co-President last year (when she was just a sophomore) and literally saved the club from extinction. Not only that, she led the club in hosting a very successful retreat for 80 participants, from other service clubs in CA. She and the co-President were responsible for planning the whole weekend and Jessica herself facilitated a workshop about Leadership that was very well received by the youth as well as the adult advisors.
This year Jessica participated in SISRV's 10th annual "She's All That!" conference by co-facilitating a workshop entitled "Transition to High School" for the 8th graders and being the moderator for our panel workshop entitled "When I grow up, I want to be...".
